Amy posted about a "Green Smoothie Challenge" today and it got me thinking. I need to boost up my morning nutrition. Toast and jam are just not cutting it anymore. I have done smoothies (green ones occasionally) here and there and enjoyed them. But I have never done them long term. Mostly because I hate my blender and the clean up drives me nuts.
But I need to feel better in the morning. I need to eat better, if not for me, then for this lovely bundle I am growing inside me. So I am doing to give Happy Foody's Green Smoothie Challenge a go. And I will force my husband to do it with me. Cause why not!
As I mentioned, the reason why I fall off the smoothie band wagon a lot is my blender. I received it as a wedding gift (10 years ago) and it works okay but not wonderfully. It doesn't crush ice very well either. Amy linked to a contest to win the Cadilac of blenders, a Vita-Mix. The darn thing is worth $450! I would love a chance to win it too. If you are interested go check out Jessie Hawkins' blog and enter.

One year my husband gave me what I thought was the most ridiculous gift: a smoothie maker. It's actually really good. In fact, I chucked my blender and still have this!
Your name caught my attention and I had to stop by. :)
Our current blender was also a wedding gift... 9 years ago. I don't even attempt to crush ice with it, but it does a decent job of smoothies as long as I add all the juicy stuff first (grapes, oranges, etc), then the spinach (I let it blend a LONG time to do a good job of the greens), then a banana, then whatever frozen fruit (mangoes, watermelon, berries, etc).
Also, rinsing the blender IMMEDIATELY is a MUST. Smoothie is LIKE GLUE when dry!
You might also want to add some of the good fats/oils to your smoothie. Coconut oil or flax oil would be good. Those fats are SO IMPORTANT for brain development... ours, but especially your baby's.
I hate our blender too! A wedding gift too! Let me know if you come across any good recipes.
We have smoothies a lot for breakfast...although not green ones!
I got rid of my blender when I super organized over a year a go. I found that I was never using it because it was annoying to take out, clean, put back... so I bought one of those hand held one; LOVE IT!!!! highly recommend it!!! Fits in my 'all the extras in the kitchen drawer' and is beyond easy to clean! Seriously!!! Don't even bother with the expensive blender get the little hand held for a fraction of the cost!! i find that I used it more in the first 6 months than I did the blender in the whole 7.5 years I had it!! (also a wedding present!).
ooohhhh...forgot! I've been living off of one breakfast food for the past 3 months!!! nonfat plain yogurt, granola (as close to natural as possible) and whatever fruit is in season (although mainly berries, apricots and peaches/nectarines). LOVE IT!!! Totally addicted and I don't think about food until lunch time!!!
That is one nice looking blender. Maybe I'll enter the contest. To get my nutrition, I eat a salad everyday with all sorts of weird stuff in it like kale, spinach, spirulina, grapes and ground salba, along with the usual fixings. :)
hhehe funny how we all got our blenders at our weddings!
